PhD Opportunities
1. Join us via the METEOR Project!
This unique, interdisciplinary training program of the new RTG METEOR is tailored to bridge the gap between Control Theory and Machine Learning. The ambition of METEOR is to train a new generation of researchers at the intersection of Machine Learning and Control Theory for complex dynamical systems, advancing research through exploring synergies, complementarities, and mutual benefits of both fields. 2. Join us via the MLCARE (EU Marie Curie) Project!
Making Medical AI Transparent, Robust, and Secure
This project focuses on building the next generation of trustworthy clinical AI—foundation models (FMs) that are not only powerful but also transparent, resilient, and safe to deploy in real healthcare environments. The PhD researcher will develop explainable AI systems using concept bottleneck models, which ensure that predictions are grounded in understandable clinical concepts. These models will be trained and tested on real-world hospital datasets (like MIMIC), enabling them to justify their decisions in ways clinicians can trust. At the same time, the project tackles the growing risks of adversarial attacks and privacy breaches in healthcare AI. Through advanced adversarial training techniques, the models will be made robust to manipulation, while their predictions are carefully calibrated to avoid overconfidence and hallucinations. The ultimate goal: AI systems clinicians can rely on—accurate, interpretable, and secure. (Updated on 2025-11-30)
Supervisors: Prof. Volker Tresp, Dr. Jindong Gu (Oxford)
Note: For this project, the applicants should not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of the recruiting beneficiary for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before the recruitment date — unless as part of a compulsory national service or a procedurefor obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention.
Thesis Opportunities
We have an available thesis topic on Industrial Visual Anomaly Detection. More information can be found here. (Updated on 2025-08-30)
1. Master Thesis Projects
Our research lab is always actively looking for motivated prospective students to conduct guided research and master thesis. We collaborate with prominent industry partners such as Google Deepmind, Meta, Amazon, Intel, Siemens, and Huawei, as well as other leading universities such as Oxford and Cambridge. We offer support and supervision for master’s these and guided research, providing students with the resources and mentorship needed to develop their skills and contribute to impactful research. Previous projects lead to publications on top conferences such as NeurIPS, ICML, CVPR, NAACL, etc. Feel free to apply by emailing your cv and transcript to tresplab at gmail.com .
HiWi Opportunities
1. HiWi positions (20h/week) on Surgical Video Understanding
We have available HiWi positions for research/engineering projects on Surgical Video Understanding, involving topics including surgical video modelling, multimodal LLM, and agentic models. HiWi positions are opened for master students enrolled at German universities and hired by the University with 20h/week contract. Feel free to contact and apply by emailing your cv and transcript to Gengyuan Zhang via zhang{at}dbs[dot]ifi[dot]lmu[dot]de.
